Suresh:
Plumbing and Electrical wiring
trade14-year-old Suresh was found with a
mourning face when the field staff visited
the railway station. The staff enquired
him and learnt that his father deserted
the family and remarried and his mother
uncared him. He ran to his Aunt’s house
and worked in a teashop. His aunty interested
in his earnings forced him to work with
a day’s rest. The boy was ready to go to
Chennai by train. The staff motivated him
and linked him in the center. He joined
in welding trade training and found it hard
to learn and shifted to electrical wiring
and plumbing trade. He completed the course
and he now works as an assistant to an electrician.
He earns Rs.1500/- per month and Rs.10/-
as daily remuneration.
Palani and Kannan –Two
wheeler Mechanic trade (TWT)
These boys have similar story of delinquency,
they work, spend their earning in smoking
and liquor. They were linked in the shelter
and spent their time in Drop – in center
for one year. After much counseling and
motivation, they were admitted in TWT training
with less interest. Later, they gained interest
and were placed first in practical training.
After training, they immediately got jobs
in two wheeler workshops in Dindigul. They
visited the shelter every now and then.
Mariamma (Dindigul): Dress
Making trade trainee aged 18 years – She
dropped out in 5th class and was working
in a Noodles making company for six years.
During their visit, the field staff identified
and linked her in dress making course. She
had difficulties in following the theory
during examination. She was good at handwork
and practical work. She supports the family
by making different type of dolls and low
cost fashionable materials. She earned Rs.2000/-
within six months and supports the family.
The parents and staff appreciated her for
hard work.
Brother’s responsibility, Palani:
One of the boy’s sister was pregnant.
As a custom in Tamilnadu wearing colorful
glass bangles and decorating the girl as
bride is one of the ceremonies during pregnancy.
The boy’s parents deserted the children
and remarried. So the sister requested the
boy to do the ceremony instead of parents.
The boy agreed and the peer group in the
center joined with him to contribute money
for the food, eatables, bangles and dress.
The boys contributed Rs. 10 to 20 and spent
Rs. 400/- for the sister. The sister and
the relatives overwhelmed with joy with
the responsibilities taken by the brother.
Eswari is a DMT trainee
joined dress making trade-training course
last year, has now been accepted into a
polytechnic course. She is real credit to
the center. The 18-year-old girl, who passed
+2 used to work in a SNS rice mill, to boil
the paddy and earn Rs. 15 per day. She had
one elder brother who worked as a painter
and earned Rs. 820 a month. The girl studied
in a polytechnic course and completed electrical
engineer course. She is now working in a
NGO with good salary.
Raman a young boy at Palani
was sent as bonded laborer for Rs.7500/-
to a man for rearing 150 goats. He stayed
in a small temporary hut with the goats.
He was given food and clothing. The boy
was bitten by insects and suffered from
allergies. He hates the situation, escaped
and reached our center. Hearing this, his
parents came to the center. They were counseled
and the boy was rescued from bonded labor.
The parents relieved the boy and sent his
brother instead of him. Raman is now engaged
in cart pulling. He comes to the center
regularly.
Kaja (Dindigul) aged 15
Years linked in Dindigul shelter by a contact
person who found him working in a hotel
as a table cleaner. He was linked in the
shelter and willingly joined the Two-wheeler
mechanism course. He was active in the class.
He contacted his parents through letter.
His father visited the boy and expressed
his gratitude for engaging the boy in a
trade thereby showing a way to his future.
The boy completed the course and works in
a workshop in Trichy and earns his livelihood.
