Location
The Sustainable Agriculture Project is situated
in the drought prone area of Silvarpatti
Panchayat, Dindigul district. The project
had adopted 10 villages with the target
group of 60 farming families; of these 50%
of them are women.
Goal
Enhance the range and extent of life-systems
and linkages in rural areas; ensure livelihood
and food security for the benefit of farming
communities.
Activities
- Select the Project target of 60 farming
families in 10 villages for the implementation
of the Project.
- Create experimental sustainable agriculture
farm and training center on 1 acre of
land at Silvarpatty.
- Conducted farmers training and field
practices.
Achievements:
- Sustainable Agriculture farmers group
were formed in 10 villages, in that 210
men, women, small and marginal farmers
were members.
- 13,000 earthworms were supplied to
the farmers. These worms are African worms.
- 3000kg vermicasting prepared from 33
vermin compost heap. The remaining earthworms
were soled to farmers. It yielded good
income to the farmers.
- Through Sustainable Agriculture farmer’s
group, 60 farming communities (30 men,
30 women) were selected for adopting organic
farming practices.
- Farmers adopted methods of fertilizer
management, integrated pest and disease
control through organic farming system.
- Few farmers cultivated cereals, pulses
and vegetables through organic farming
method in their selected field.
- 60-village meeting were conducted and
1050 farmers and landless labours took
part and benefited from these meeting.
- The farmers used organic farming methods
like water and soil conservation and vermicomposting.
