HIV/AIDS
Awareness Project
Begun
in February 2002, this project aimed at
reducing the rate HIV/AIDS in Dindigul District
by giving training to local volunteers,
NGOs, Youth clubs, Teachers and Self Help
Groups and to facilitate education to the
target population. The program trained a
core group to act as community educators
within their target areas. The training
aimed to provide technical level training
by a qualified resource team from Meenakshi
Mission Hospital and Research Center in
Madurai. After training, the participants
were expected to play a key role in awareness
programs.
Project Activities
- Conducting Trainers Training programs
for selected volunteers, NGO heads and
staff, Youth club members, Self Help Group
members.
- Conduct community level AIDS awareness
programs such as public meetings, school
/ college programs and rallies.
- Provide counseling service to those
who are at risk.
- The preparation and distribution of
appropriate local language pamphlets,
booklets, posters and leaflets among the
public.
Project Achievements
- Five Training the Trainers Programs
(TTP) have been conducted.
- 65 participants from 42 NGOs participated
in this training program.
- 48 Self Help Group leaders, youth club
members, Panchayat leaders and film fans
association leaders participated in TTP.
In this program, HIV/AIDS awareness songs
and street play techniques were taught.
- 37 School and Balwadi (pre-school)
teachers, Municipal volunteers, conveners
and community nutrition workers took part
in an awareness program on HIV/AIDS.
- Mother Theresa University, Kodaikanal
invited SEEDS Trust to organize a TTP
for the NGOs working in Kodaikanal. 22
NGO staff and chief functionaries took
part in the training from 8 NGOs.
- A program for Commercial Sex Workers
(CSW) was done in support with Dindigul
Government Hospital, under the South India
Association for AIDS Prevention. Totally
27 women and 15 men took part.
The Formation of AIDS Prevention
and Action Forum (APAF)
With the intention of integrating existing
NGOs working in Dindigul District, SEEDS
Trust organized a chief functionaries meeting
where a name was given to this consortium
for resource sharing, communication and
effective implementation of the project.
This forum organized a mass level rally
where about 1500 participants from National
Social Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Dindigul
colleges along with APAF NGOs took part.
