Shelter, Protection, Education and Development
for Youth (SPEDY), Dindigul
The
present population of Dindigul, Tamil Nadu
is 19,80,000 (nineteen lakhs eighty thousand)
and is growing daily due to industrial and
commercial activity. Mostly, children are
sent to town by desperate parents in search
of job thereby earn for the family. With
no family support, these children work in
teashops, restaurants or small industries;
textile spinning mills, tanneries, clean
shoes or resort to rag picking to earn few
rupees. Some children turn to begging and/or
petty theft. Before commencing SPEDY, there
was no such service to assist homeless street
and working children and no efforts to reintegrate
them to their families.
SPEDY was started in 2000 to take direct
action in assisting the identified need
of street and working children in Dindigul
for vocational training and enable them
to move out of their precarious existence
on the streets into a situation which offers
safety, stability and improved employment
prospects. SEEDS aims to uplift the present
condition of street and working children
who are pushed to unsafe occupation and
aimless life.
The objectives are
- To raise the status and self-worth
of street and working children in Dindigul.
- To improve the quality of life and
opportunities for such children.
- To work in conjunction with the children,
governmental and non-governmental agencies
and to develop appropriate strategies
and services for street children.
- To raise awareness on child rights
amongst the wider community.
The activities include drop-in center,
vocational training, job placements, non-formal
education and sponsorship and reintegration
to the families.
