Shelter,
Protection, Education and Development for
Youth (SPEDY), Palani
Palani
is a small temple town; which has acquired
fame due to the famous temple of Lord Murugan.
The temple attracts millions of devotees
through out the year. Trafficking and abuse
of children by various groups including
tourists and religious groups is very high.
The purpose of starting a shelter at this
temple town in 2003 was to work to protect
these children and evolve as a pioneering
model for street and working children under
these challenging conditions in a semi-urban
town. Eradication and elimination of child
labor aren’t our aim but to empower and
raise the voice of these Children and Young
Person (CYP) thereby creating a descent
livelihood.
The objectives are
- To raise the status and self-worth
of street and working children in Dindigul
- To improve the quality of life and
opportunities for such children
- To work in conjunction with the children,
governmental and non-governmental agencies
and to develop appropriate strategies
and services for street children
- To raise awareness on child rights
amongst the wider community
The objectives are similar to that of SPEDY,
Dindigul but the impact and responsibilities
are quantitatively high than that of Dindigul.
